banana, mandarin, orange - without peels but layer of silicone

food decomposes because bacteria, fungi, oxygen and moisture all convert plant matter back to basic organic soil nutrients. but what happens

when fruit peels get replaced by their silicon copies? in ‘fruits’ the research by german artist michel lamoller, a selection of fruits are peeled
and enclosed by a layer of silicon, ultimately slowing down their decomposition. the organic food slowly starts to enter a breakdown process
which can be watched in it detail, thanks to the almost transparent enclosure. after almost five months nothing is left inside
.

the kitchen is where it all...

rotating kitchen by zeger reyers

the kitchen is where it all begins—the heart of the home which is not only a place of preparing and sharing meals,
but also a social hub where friends and family gather. there was a time when it was defined more as a work space than a living space,
but overtime its role within our domestic environments has evolved, and the distance between a cook and his guests has minimized.
we see more and more in the design of new homes, the kitchen opening up onto other rooms, so that there is no longer a physical barrier
between the culinary laboratory and the rest of the activities that are going on in the shared environment. in this way,
he who prepares the food has now become somewhat of a performer. this is further evidenced in the many restaurants that have now adopted this concept of
the ‘open-kitchen’, where patrons are able to watch their meals being made right before their eyes.

in short, the kitchen is a world of its own.
one where food is cut and cleaned, cooked and seasoned, served and eaten. when there are leftovers they are put in the fridge, or frozen,
then reheated in the microwave, and if we forget about it, it is thrown away, and left to decompose over time.

all images courtesy patricia piccinini

commissioned for the centenary of canberra, ‘the sky whale’ hot-air balloon by sierra leonean artist patricia piccinini will be flying at other locations around
australia during 2013. in the place of wings, piccinini imagined huge udders that might contain the gas of the giant flying sculpture, as well as a huge bulbous body.
before commencing production, a three-dimension model was developed from a series drawings using a cad program. the prototype of the ‘skywhale’ was then
sent to cameron balloons in bristol, where the colouring and patination of the creature was resolved in more detail. transferred the colours, patterns and textures
of the design were then later transferred onto 3,535 metres of fabric - sewn together with approximately 3.3 million stitches.

‘the skywhale may appear fantastic but think about the blue whale – an air breathing mammal that lives in the ocean – and it doesn’t seem so far-fetched,’
says piccinini. ‘I think that when we look up at the skywhale and wonder what it is ‘for’, it might remind us that nature is not necessarily ‘for us’. it just ‘is’
and we’re just lucky enough to be around to see it.’

The elusive, self-sustaining nature of the cat finds its human reflection best in the personality of the artist - as they often seek

inspiration from their feline companions. similar to ancient egyptian culture - in the sense that they revered cats as borderline deities -
cat domestication owed to the clear depictions of house cats in paintings from over 3,600 years ago. being viewed as both an object
of worship and an adored pet, the animals frequently were adorned with jeweled necklaces and gold earrings. likewise,
the compassionate relationships between artist and cat are showcased in a photographic series originally put together by flavorwire.
the collection of images include the likes of ai weiwei and ‘lai lai’ - one of his 40 cats - and andy warhol with one his 25 cats -
all of which were named ‘sam’.

Titled ‘camera obscura’, cuban-born artist abelardo morell has taken a series of long exposure photographs that capture vivid scenes of well known
sites from around the world. from times square in new york to the pantheon in rome, morell blackens the windows of site specific rooms by setting
up a small pinhole within the different located fenestrations. inverted projected images from the exterior environment floods the inner fabric of the space,
wrapping everything with high detail. as a result, accurate compositions emerge from the over-exposed photographs.

‘I made my first picture using camera obscura techniques in my darkened living room in 1991,’ says morell ‘over time, this project has taken me
from my living room to all sorts of interiors around the world. one of the satisfactions i get from making this imagery comes from my seeing the
weird and yet natural marriage of the inside and outside.’

Wim L. Noorduin, a postdoctoral candidate at the harvard school of engineering and applied sciences, has grown a collective of microscopic crystal flowers by dissolving barium chloride and sodium silicate into a beaker of water. in a chemical reaction, barium carbonate crystals are formed as carbon dioxide
from the air to diffuses the solution, creating intricately jagged forms and patterns. ‘in nature, you see many complex shapes and patterns,’ says wim
noorduin ’there’s a huge interest to grow complex shapes at the microscale,’ in response to differences in the environment, the structure of a shell
dramatically changes as the acidity of the solution and the temperature become modified. images are then taken using an electron microscope -
which capture details of the composition.

7487:

One of my best friends Imanol Ortigosa, are in Taipei living the free life and today he published this picture on his facebook and i can’t resist the tentation to show it at the world the magic of the artist he painted this colour labyrinth. Thanks Imanol to show me this !!!!

On the outskirts of Taichung, there lives a man by the name of Rainbow Grandpa, or Grandpa Huang (Huang Yung-Fu). He lives in an old military dependents village, made up of houses built in the late 1940s-1950s, used as housing for Nationalist soldiers, which were later converted into permanent housing. One day, the Taichung government announced that they wanted to demolish the place. But Grandpa Huang was having none of that. He immediately grabbed some brightly hued paints and a brush, and set to work. He would save the village, and save it he did. And not only did he rescue it from demolition, he also created an incredible rainbow village. The government decided to shift their urban renewal plans around to help preserve the whimsical little world that this passionate old man brought to life.

Muntjac Mitosis

These are fixed, permeabilized, and fluorescently-stained muntjac skin fibroblasts in either interphase or a phase of mitosis. The phases, going from top left to bottom right, are: interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.

During interphase, a eukaryotic cell multiplies its inventory of organelles and replicates its DNA (pink), growing in size.1 Next, mitosis is activated and the cell enters prophase, during which its replicated DNA is supercoiled into chromosomes comprised of identical, paired sister chromatids. Eventually, the cell’s nuclear envelope disintegrates, and special microtubules (green) linking the kinetochores of chromatids to the cell’s poles develop. The cell then enters metaphase, during which the centromeres of its chromosomes become aligned in a plane at its equator. After passing a key mitotic checkpoint, the cell enters anaphase, during which the paired sister chromatids separate and are pulled to opposite poles. Finally, in telophase, nuclear envelopes and nucleoli re-form around each pole’s collection of DNA, chromatids uncoil back into chromatin, and the cell divides in two. Each daughter cell is at the start of interphase, and the cell cycle repeats.2
